This is my version (my first attempt) at a red velvet cookie.  I have seen red velvet cakes but I’m a cookie guy.  The only red velvet cookie recipes I found used the store-bought red velvet cake mix.  I don’t like cake-y cookies.  I came up with my own red velvet cookie recicpe based off my normal cookie dough.

I think this is a pretty damn good cookie representation of a red velvet cake.  I am definitely going to make these for special occasions.  Perhaps even in my own cookie store someday.

This recipe makes about 27 cookies (some people make smaller cookies and get 36).

2-1/4 cups all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 cup butter, softened
3/4 cup packed brown sugar
1/4 cup white sugar
1 (3.4 ounce) package instant vanilla pudding mix
2 eggs
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
2 Tablespoons cocoa mix (I used Ovaltine since I had it around)
1 oz red food coloring

  • Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
  • Cream together the butter, brown sugar, and white sugar (I use baker’s sugar, it’s finer).
  • Beat in the instant pudding until blended. 
  • Stir in the eggs, vanilla, cocoa powder, baking soda, and red food coloring.
  • Blend in the flour mixture.

It’s bright freaking red at this point.  Looks cool as hell.

  • Drop rounded spoonfuls onto a cookie tray.  I use one of those with the air pocket and it works really well.  I only put 9 to a sheet, one sheet at a time.  It takes longer to bake but they turn out perfect.
  • Bake for about 10 minutes.  They should still look just a little moist.  The key here is to take them out of the oven and leave them on the cookie sheet for about 5 minutes.  They will continue to cook just a little longer on the hot tray.  5 minutes is long enough for them to cool before moving them off to somewhere else to cool.  This ensures a moist, soft cookie.

That’s it for the cookies.  Let them cool down before you put the frosting on.  The frosting isn’t original with me but it’s really good.

This is the cream cheese frosting recipe I used.  I think it will make the right amount.  I heap the frosting on.  I’ll take pics of the cookies tonight and post them soon.

This is a great summer drink.  In fine LD tradition it’s strong as shit.

In a glass mix:

  • ice
  • 1 shot of citrus vodka
  • 1/4 shot of Chambord
  • 1 bottle of Mike’s Hard Lemonade (or Cranberry if you like)

Sip on that in the sun and get fucked up.

Unlike Kirk, a flaming Larry has nothing to do with being gay. It’s another real man’s drink. Actually, it’s a shot. And what’s a shot unless it’s fucking strong?

  • Mix this in a pitcher for best effect, choose a flavor, my favorite is lemonade
  • 1/2 the pitcher is Everclear, not the pussy 151 stuff, but the 190 proof
  • 1/4 flavored Vodka, choose appropriately. I like citrus or lemon vodka for a lemonade flavor though you could use anything depending on your choice of flavor
  • 1/4 Schnapps, again this should be flavored to match
  • Kool-aid pre-mix with sugar, I use lemonade flavor, mix enough for the pitcher
  • Mix well, only pour 1 shot at a time, never allow more than 2 shots per person per night
  • Pour the shot, light it (it is very flammable), blow it out! Shoot it! Pass out

This is ridiculously strong and not for the casual drinker. It’s a REAL shot, not some lame $2 shooter from the lady at the bar.

I am starting a new part of my blog, drink recipes.  These are LD specials.  To start it off, one of my favorites, the Bloody Larry.

  • In a pint glass
  • 1 shot of vodka
  • 1 Jalapeno stuffed olive
  • A little of the olive juice
  • Some salt and celery salt
  • A bit of tomato juice, V8, or bloody mary mix
  • 1 beer
  • Add spices such as Tobasco or horseradish as desired

That’s a man’s drink.  And so tasty.  Combines the best of everything, a SD martini, a bloody mary, a depth charge.
